Makers Club Meeting # 2.

Sorry I didn't get a post for the first week but my pics didn't turn out so this week I got one of the students to take pics. He did a great job.  I kind of forget to take pics while we are working.

This week we reinforced last weeks naming convention.  Bricks and plates.
Here is a page on the conventions we are using. http://www.squidoo.com/lego-identification

We also worked on this weeks lesson bridging or how to make a Lego sandwich. Not that type of sandwich.  This is a way of making longer parts from shorter lengths of plates or bricks.  To show this process we built a fly swatter and swatted the large fly buzzing around the tables.  Me

You might notice a few older students. These are Nick, Matthew and Ema.  We are trying something new as a way to increase the participation of older Makers in the younger programs. We pay the helpers based on their grade and grade for the project. Our helpers earn $5 per session for the time they spend on the projects. I felt that it was fair to compensate the students for their help.  Without the help of the older students we would only be able to do 2 or 3 students per session. In the past we have allowed the helpers free membership to later programs for each week they had worked. Last year I wasn't able to do other programs so they didn't get to use their credit. This way even if there isn't any other programs they have been compensated for their time and effort.
Next week brings us the larger build. We will be building a 200 piece model. This build should take the full day and reinforce what we have already learned.

Each of the students earned another 5 experience points of the 40 they need to participate in the big build.   Next weeks project is worth 25.  We will have more on how experience points are used later in the year.
Please remember to bring a snack for each student.  Its a long way from lunch to 5:00 and little tummies get rumbly by the end of the day.
