3-2-1 Abort!!!!!

This week we worked on a special project and invited everyone to join us.  We had a great time.  The kids had a good time loading Mentos into Diet Coke.  We had 30 bottles of coke and even more Mentos.

Each child got to load a soda bottle with Mentos and watch the fountain.
Then we started our build.  This week we were going to build a rocket powered by the air pressure generated from the CO2 in soda.  We built a launcher for pvc and duck tape.

The boys and girls took turns cutting and assembling the launcher.

The idea was to capture the pressure from the bottles and send it into the empty bottle giving us a soda filled water bottle rocket.  We had small set back.

The pressure in the bottles was greater then the one I tested.  The soda pressure blew the duck tape off the soda bottles releasing the carbon dioxide.  I had hoped to shoot the bottle several times but the total failure of the launcher meant we had didn't have a choice but to just play with the rest of the sodas.  This summer I plan to try again with glued pvc.
