Week Two The Rain in Spain falls mainly on Makers Club.

The insides of a video cassette recorder or VC...Image via WikipediaIt was a reqular day for us in Makers club. We took apart two radios and a VCR. Oh and it rained.   So far we have had rain every makers club meeting.  I'm hoping we will have a couple of weeks where it's clear.

This week was all about taking things apart and seeing how they went together.  The  guys did a wonder job in taking things apart.  The radios yielded a couple of gear boxes and some nice messy grease that all the boys took turns in getting on their hands.  The VCR yielded a screw drive and some nice motors that will allow us to build some nice weapons for the robots.  I hope we can have all the parts ready in four weeks.
There was much smashing, and gnashing and bashing and I'm sorry to report that we weren't able to repair them but then we weren't really trying.   After the guys were done with the pliers. screwdrivers, and other tools of "destruction" we were left with lots of lost parts.   We scoured the tables and floors to make sure all the little vacuum cleaner killer parts were accounted for and cleaned up.  Then we had the piece de resistance I brought out the Ipod.

We took the back off the Ipod and examined the parts.   I showed the kids how to take the back off the Ipod, remove the battery, case, motherboard and screen.  We didn't remove the click wheel since it's very hard to get reseated.

I spent some time going over the parts and how to replace them and explained that the one I had there had a dead harddrive.  Since its' a 20 gig classic its not really in my best interest to spend to money to replace it.

While we were working Miss Meinert came in with a broken  printer and asked us to scavenge the printer ink cartridges from it.  I had two of the boys get on that and they did a great job in taking the parts out.

All in all we had a very productive day and I can't wait for next week.  Please don't go home and take apart the microwave.
